1 Year Blogiversary | What I’ve Learned + Giveaway

One year in the books. Or I guess on the internet, huh?

And what a year it’s been.  I started this blog as a creative outlet for me. I love doing DIY projects and of course talking about my experiences with my kids. I like baking and finding some fancy party drinks. This blog has challenged me in many ways and helped me grow as well. I hit publish on my very first post November 1, 2016 and that’s when my journey began. I found out two months later I was pregnant and boy did that take a toll on me. I actually took about 3 months off from blogging but it was much needed! It was hard taking care of a 2 year old and a 10 month old while you’re pregnant! I came back and was ready to start this up again with lots of ideas in mind. I’ve met a lot of mamas and bloggers online that are just like me and I love keeping up with them. I’ve been excited, I’ve felt creative, I’ve also been stressed to meet deadlines, and worried about engagement on certain posts. It’s such an amazing community to be apart of. I’ve never regretted starting this and look forward to what’s to come..

So here are somethings that I’ve learned in my first year of blogging

I set my website up from scratch. Watched countless youtube videos and asked a lot of questions about how to get everything going. If you missed my start a blog post you can find it here. Starting a self hosted blog is no joke. Before you decide you want to jump into a blog, I recommend to do a little research and set up a list of what you need to get done before launch day. You can do what you’d like since it’s your blog but anyone and everyone will tell you never launch a blog with only one post have a few set to post and a few more in your pipeline to work on.

This has been a hard one. It’s been hard not to take things so personally and at first I really did! I haven’t had a lot of negative feedback but sometimes when you put so much work and effort into something you want to know that people are seeing it and maybe benefiting from it in some way.  I just want continue to grow and write things that people enjoy!

I mean, before I started this thing I was thinking, this should be easy. Boy was I wrong. Blogging is VERY time consuming. If you could see me right now, I am sitting in the dark, on my couch, at 5 in the morning because everyone is still sleeping and I am finally getting a chance to write this. So much more goes into blogging then I ever could have dreamed of. From being creative and coming up with a new post, to pictures, to editing, writing and proof reading, publishing, and then promoting your content to get people to read what you’ve just spent all of this time on, is a lot of work. With that being said, I really enjoy it that’s why I keep doing it. People e-mailing, messaging, commenting, and sharing really keeping me going because I know out there someone is appreciating the time I’ve put into it. Even if it’s just a handful of people.

Photos are key for blog posts. They are what draw people in to read your content and to tell a visual story. I’m still learning everything about photography myself and ready to invest in a new camera. DSLR are the way to go to get the most out of your pictures. I currently have the Canon Rebel T5. I got this as a starter camera just to learn the basics of how to operate one. I am now ordering the Canon 80d. This camera has so many perks that the T5 doesn’t have and it’s a great for video content which I’d like to get more into.

Finding a great blogging community is HUGE!  When you have looked and looked for the answer on how to fix something for your blog or how to add this to that and can’t figure it out, having this amazing community of bloggers that have been there and done that is a big relief! I’ve joined quite a few on Facebook and two of them really stood out and have always answered when I’ve had questions. A lot of the bloggers have offered up great advice and are always so helpful!

When things start getting overwhelming or too hard remember why you started blogging. Was it because you wanted to document milestones for you kids, keep track of huge events in your life, have a place to showcase your talents, or show off your amazing wardrobe, just remember you had a reason and purpose for it all. I know it’s hard not to compare yourself to other bloggers that might seem like they are doing better then you or progressing faster or gaining more followers, just don’t forget consistency is key and you’ll get there too.

Thank you everyone that has followed along on this journey over the past year. It’s been so fun and really eye opening of just how many people love to read what I have to say. I hope to continue to grow and learn from everyone. My second year is going to be better than the first and I can’t wait for you all to come along with me.
